Artist's Comments

In this case we decided to have this Troll represent the fear the Inuit have of starvation since it is so much a part of their history. It needs to be said that not all of the Inuit mythology is so dark and nasty.

Eskimo is actually an insult in the inuit language. Inuit are the people.

But where does the word eskimo come from then?

(And it wasn't my intention to insult the Inuit)...

I like the pose and the setting makes the painting sing with reality.

haha, don't worry, I didn't think it was.
So far as I know it was a word the inuit used to mean "eaters of raw meat." To use it to describe one of their own was an insult, but that was how they described the early arctic explorers (because that's what the explorers did when they were hungry...) and so the name stuck. It's like the word Kangaroo. It doesn't mean kangaroo at all, rather, "what is that?"
